Antibiotical resistance is one of the main challenges of health and will be a severe issue in the upcoming years. Some bacteria evade destruction by the immune system by hiding inside cells, thus being protected by the infected cells as most antibiotics cannot cross this barrier. A human macrophage cell line was infected with MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) to test ceria-based nanoparticles, covered with bioglass, for their antibiotic properties. Analyses with different spectrographic methods like electron microscopy showed the effectiveness of the hybrid nanoparticle against MRSA without harming the human macrophages. This offers a route to the straightforward development of robust intracellular antibacterial agents.
