Sustainable, adherent cell culture systems made from plant-based plastic

Company
Green Elephant Biotech GmbH, Gießen, Germany
To optimize the cell cultivation process, the company Green Elephant Biotech has developed the CellScrew®10K (CSK10) and the CellScrew®6K (CS6K). The adherent cell expansion systems are made of sustainable plant-based plastic and can help reduce CO₂ emissions in the cell cultivation process by up to 90%. The helical design of the compact cell culture bottles offers a significantly higher material-to-surface ratio compared to conventional multi-tray stack systems. For example, a CSK10 system offers as much growing space as 8 standard roller bottles. During incubation, the systems rotate around their own axis, which means that the cells and culture media are distributed evenly on the spiral-shaped inner surface of the so-called Archimedes' screws, which promotes gas exchange and the supply of nutrients to the cell culture. The harvested cells from the CellScrews can be used in a variety of ways, such as in cell and gene therapy, vaccine production or drug development. The company is currently working on integrating the environmentally friendly cell screws into a fully automated platform that will enable real-time monitoring and regulation of all critical cultivation parameters.
