Epidermal skin corrosion test
Regulatory accepted 2007
European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing, Ispra, Italy
The EpiCS SCT is used to assess the skin corrosion potential of chemicals.
The reconstructed epidermis consists of proliferating and differentiating keratinocytes. The test is based on the assumption that skin corrosion is partly due to cytotoxic effects of chemicals.
The cells are brought together with the test chemicals and the subsequent determination of cytotoxicity is performed by the MTT assay. The test is available as a commercial kit. Validated and regulatory approved TM2007-01 (EU) by EURL ECVAM (TSAR list), OECD Test No. 431.
