Mechanical 3D skin model for dermatological exposure studies

Company
Ten Bio Ltd, Dundee, United Kingdom
The company Ten Bio has developed a special cultivation technology to develop a faithful model of human skin (TenSkin). To imitate the physiological conditions, the skin cells obtained from surgical tissue samples are exposed to mechanical tension in culture. This has a positive effect on the differentiation, structure, functionality and survival of the cells. The resulting three-dimensional models validly recapitulate the different layers and cell types (including immune and pigment cells, hair follicles, sweat glands and skin tags), as well as the skin's barrier function. By constantly maintaining physiological tension, complex skin reactions can be observed and examined under controlled conditions over a period of up to over 14 days. The TenSkin models can be used in different studies. They are suitable, for example, for researching wound healing and rejuvenation processes, irritation, inflammation or allergic reactions of the skin. In addition, they can be used in drug development for efficacy and toxicology screenings and help to reliably identify potential active ingredient candidates as well as substances that are harmful to the skin and to improve drug therapy for dermatological diseases.
