The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanisms that underlie endometriosis. In particular, the role of HOX genes was investigated based on their critical role in endometrial development and receptivity during implantation. Tissue samples were collected from 15 women with endometriosis and 15 patients without endometriosis during laparoscopic surgery. RNA was isolated and a PCR analysis was performed. Altered expression pattern for the HOX clusters and their cofactors were observed in endometriosis when compared to control tissue biopsies. The results suggest critical roles for the HOX cluster and their cofactors in endometriosis pathophysiology.
HOX cluster and their cofactors showed an altered expression pattern in eutopic and ectopic endometriosis tissues
