Plant-based hydrogels for 3D cell cultivation and 3D bioprinting

Company
UPM Biomedicals, Helsinki, Finland
The company UPM Biomedicals specializes in the development of plant-based hydrogels. The GrowDex hydrogels are based on nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC), which is obtained from birch wood. The biomimetic imitation of an extracellular matrix (ECM) supports the function and differentiation of the cultured cells. The base gel GrowDex and the hydrogels based on it can be used in various applications and are suitable, among other things, for 3D cell cultivation of spheroids and organoids or the development of organ-on-chip models. GrowDex-T is a completely transparent hydrogel that was specifically developed for high-resolution imaging procedures. For the development of personalized models, the company offers the hydrogel GrowDex-A, which contains a modified avidin group that enables the binding of research-relevant protein or peptide groups. In addition, UPM Biomedical offers a product range (GrowInk Range) to carry out bioprinting applications. The gels are all ready to use and can be mixed directly with the cell media without any complicated intermediate steps. To reuse the cells for further experiments, such as protein or gene expression studies, the company has also developed GrowDase. This is a cell repair enzyme that allows cells to be released without damaging their structure or function.
