3D alveoli model for toxicity and drug screening
CompanyInvitrolize, Belvaux, Luxembourg
The company Invitrolize has developed a micro-tissue model of the lungs (ALIsens) that enables the identification and differentiation of substances harmful to the airways. For this purpose, three-dimensional cells are cultivated along an air-liquid barrier, which recapitulate the complex alveolar barrier. The cell cultures can then be exposed to different exposure conditions in the laboratory. ALIsens expresses relevant surface proteins (TSLPr, CD54 and CD86) that allow differentiation between irritants and airway sensitizers. The model has already enabled the pro-haptens ethylenediamine (EDA) and piperazine (Pip) to be identified as allergenic substances that were not recognized by previous test systems. With ALIsens, specific toxicology and drug screenings can be performed and their effects at the cellular level (inflammatory processes, effects on gas exchange, cellular interactions, etc.) can be explored in more depth. The model can therefore help to improve drug therapy for lung diseases and expand our understanding of cellular processes that affect gas exchange within the lungs.
