Role of hydrogen disulfide in hypertension tested in patients and tissue samples

2017
The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, USA
It is increasingly apparent that dysregulation of the enzymatic production and function of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of hypertension-associated vascular dysfunction. In the present study, the researchers aimed at examining a functional role for H2S in a cutaneous model of microvascular dysfunction in middle-aged hypertensive (HTN) patients. Skin biopsies were used to measure expression levels of an H2S biosynthetic enzyme. Cutaneous vascular sensitivity and responsiveness were measured directly in the patients. The findings show a reduced level of expression of the H2S biosynthetic enzyme in HTN patients and vasodilatation was affected. Overall, the findings indicate a link between endogenous H2S and hypertension.
