SmallAir from the company Epithelix is a model of the human small airways that is produced from human primary cells and can be cultivated for over a year (Air-Liquid-Interface, ALI). In the case of Small Air-HF, a coculture with fibroblasts is also present. SmallAir is available from healthy donors as well as patients with COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis and smokers. SmallAir is characterised by mucus production, active cilia movement and ion transport, as well as the presence of tight junctions, metabolic activity and the release of cytokines, chemokines and metalloproteinases.
