SARS-CoV-2 drug repurposing after cell screening

The need for antiviral drugs effective against SARS-CoV-2 is urgent. In this high throughput cell assay two human cell lines, a hepatocyte and a respiratory cell line were used to screen 3.000 compounds. It was shown that entry pathways can differ in different human cell lines and other environmental factors like pH can have an impact on a substance entering a cell. That may be an explanation for 23 identified drugs being active in hepatocytes, but only 9 of these are active in the respiratory cell line. As these drugs are in use or FDA approved they offer a potential rapid clinical implementation due to repurposing.
