In vitro study of glyphosate effects on thyroid cells

December 2022
University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy
Glyphosate is a pesticide, which is associated with an increased risk of cancer, endocrine-disrupting effects, as well as several other adverse effects for human health. As in vitro data for adverse effects on thyroid are lacking, the FRTL-5 cell line was used to create a 2D and a spheroid-3D model. Different concentrations of Glyphosate showed a reduction in cell viability and proliferation in both models. Increased ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) production was found and high Glyphosate concentrations prevented ability to form spheroids. These adverse effects show a potentially harmful mode of action of Glyphosate exposure in vitro.
